How to Check if a Pickleball Paddle Is Approved
“Is this paddle legal?” starts with two questions: which exact paddle is it, and which equipment rules apply to the event? Free Paddle Lookup helps you compare the model with published approval lists. Free Paddle Scan adds photo identification for signed-in referees.
Start with the event’s equipment authority
USA Pickleball and UPA-A publish separate paddle lists. A result on one list does not establish the result on the other. Confirm which organization’s equipment requirements the event follows, and read any event-specific instructions.
PickleballOfficials displays the sources separately so you can see which organization each status comes from. Use the official source link when you need to verify the current entry.
Match the exact model, not just the brand
Read the markings on the paddle. Search by brand or model, then compare the model number and thickness where available. Similar names, different generations, and visually similar variants can make a broad brand search inconclusive.
If the search returns several candidates, check the printed details before choosing one. A familiar shape or color alone is not enough to establish the model.
Quick checklist
- Check the brand and full model name.
- Compare model number, generation, and thickness where those are available.
- Read the status for the relevant organization.
- Check the source’s last-check information and follow its official link.
Use a photo when identification is the hard part
With a free referee account, open Paddle Scan and photograph the paddle or upload a clear photo. Include readable branding and model markings. The tool suggests catalog matches and shows the available source statuses.
Compare suggested matches with the physical paddle. When possible matches have different statuses, identifying the correct variant matters. If the image does not resolve the model, retake a clearer photo or search the printed details manually.
A missing result is not automatically a ban
No search result can mean the model is spelled differently, has not appeared in the current local copy, or requires a more specific search. Check the official list before drawing a conclusion.
Read any removal notice, qualification, or source warning displayed with a result. If the source is unavailable or stale, use the official source directly or follow the event’s escalation process. Do not turn an uncertain lookup into a definitive approval decision.
Make the next courtside check easier
You can use text search without an account. Create a free referee account when you want to use photo identification, and return to the paddle tool whenever the exact model is unclear.
For an actual tournament equipment question, follow the event’s procedures and involve the appropriate referee leadership when needed. A current source check and a careful model comparison give that discussion a better starting point.
