Pickleball Referee Pre-Match Checklist
A pre-match checklist helps a referee catch preventable problems while there is still time to solve them. Use this as a memory aid, then add the specific steps required by your event, rule set, and assigned role.
Confirm the assignment
Resolve a mismatch with authorized event staff. Do not assume that a schedule board, message, and score sheet are interchangeable if they disagree.
- Correct court and expected start time
- Correct players or teams and match format
- Your role and the roles of any other assigned officials
- Who to contact if the prior match runs late or information conflicts
Confirm the governing information
Know which current rulebook and event instructions apply. Review only the event-specific information you are authorized to use; informal summaries should not replace the official source.
- Applicable rules authority and current version
- Match format and event instructions
- Approved process for questions, appeals, interruptions, or escalation
- Any briefing updates issued by authorized staff
Check the court and your materials
Look for hazards, obstructions, missing equipment, confusing court markings, or communication problems. Report issues through the event's process rather than attempting a fix outside your role.
- Required match record or device
- Writing instrument and backup if used
- Working timing or communication equipment if assigned
- Safe, unobstructed assigned position
Reset yourself before you begin
Take a moment to put away unrelated distractions, review the first task, and settle your breathing. Starting in a rush makes it harder to notice a simple mismatch.
