Tournament Day
Pickleball Referee Tournament-Day Checklist
Tournament day is easier when routine details are handled before they become urgent. This checklist covers practical preparation without replacing the instructions from your tournament director, referee coordinator, or applicable officials briefing.
Before leaving
If an instruction is missing or contradictory, ask the listed event contact. Avoid relying on a social post or a prior year's routine.
- Recheck the event date, venue, parking, arrival time, and contact instructions
- Review messages for schedule or venue changes
- Bring event-required clothing, identification, materials, water, food, medication, and weather protection
- Charge any device the event expects you to use
At arrival and check-in
Tournament schedules move. Treat the current authorized assignment source as the working plan and confirm how changes will be communicated.
- Follow the event's check-in process
- Confirm where updates and assignments will be posted
- Learn who is authorized to answer rules and operations questions
- Note restrooms, water, safe storage, and emergency access
- Attend the required briefing and record changes
Before each assignment
Use the shorter pre-match checklist for the court, players, format, materials, assigned crew, and applicable rule source. Arrive with enough time to resolve a mismatch without delaying play.
Between assignments
Fatigue can show up as rushing, irritability, or missed information. Asking for help early is more professional than waiting for a small problem to grow.
- Complete and return required records
- Confirm the next assignment and report time
- Use authorized break and meal procedures
- Hydrate, eat, and reset attention
- Report an injury, equipment issue, or availability change promptly
End-of-day closeout
Confirm that required materials and records have been returned. Check the next day's report information before leaving and make a brief note of anything you want to review.
